Assignment 8-Henry Lee
Author Ruzich uses sources to develop ideas by using them as her main sentences in her paragraphs rather than supporting her ideas, I think she takes the information directly from her sources and uses them as the main ideas in her essay. So her sources contribute to her essay by providing her audience with interesting ideas and facts as the main focus in her paragraphs which makes me as a audience member, stay interested in what information she has to present. An example of how Ruzich uses a source to do more than support her claim is on page 428, where she quotes "The number of Starbucks locations worldwide could someday rival the total number of McDonalds' restaurants." She uses this source to lead into her thesis, and by using that quote she knows that she has gotten the attention of her audience and drew them into her paper. Another example is on the bottom of page 429, she uses a quote about how the early civilizations who had control of the coffee bean became a strong nation. But this is misleading because she then writes about how the controllers of the coffee production were only improving their own lives and often at the expense of the people who actually grow and harvest the crops. Again, on the middle of page 430, she begins explaining how the World Bank was trying to support Vietnam's developing coffee industry but then leads into a point where she is saying that the World Bank was enticed to support Vietnam because they had cheap labor costs and when combined with low quality beans then the beans would be very cheap to produce and therefore can make high profits off of them. Lastly on page 431, she says that "four multinational corporations dominate world markets, accounting for 40% of the coffee trade." This information that she uses from her source is good information but in the next sentence she adds that Dunkin' Donuts still sells more coffee than any specialty retailer. I think she likes to keep her sentence structure unpredictable to keep her audience "on their toes" while reading her essay. So after doing this assignment I have realized that the tradition usage of sources isn't the most productive way in getting the readers attention, and also to use sources as the main idea in a paragraph is much stronger than using my own ideas as the main idea. I think Ruzich uses her sources almost as a backbone for her essay and that she uses her own ideas and thoughts to supplement the information that are in the sources.

Assignment 7-Henry Lee
Reflection:
After the in class activity, I realized that the judicial system at the University at the Pacific weren't adequately trained to handle sexual assault cases like the one of Beckett Brennan. Also, I learned that 95% of sexual assaults on college campuses aren't reported, which is a scary thought because what if a close friend of mine was sexually assaulted but never told anyone? That would make them feel very uncomfortable at the university and would most likely interrupt their learning at the school. Something I didn't realize about the story was why the school didn't bring in police to help them determined the consequences that the perpetrators should receive, and for the two players who were allowed to return to the school and play basketball again is just wrong. I would never want my university represented by some people who were involved in a sexual assault, it just wouldn't be right. As for my own research process, I learned that I need to be through in my research and find all evidence necessary to compose a great research paper that will pass at portfolios.
Application:
In my annotated bibliography there are several perspectives that are presented, but there are also some that are left out since I only used ten sources. To me a perspective is the different views about my topic that I am researching about, which is social media and I am trying to figure out if it affects the way teenagers communicate. Many of my sources on the AB had the perspective of an adult researching about social media and if it changes teenage communication. Also a few of my sources had the perspective of teenagers and why they choose not to use social media, a majority of them said the main reason was a lack of motivation or poor use of their time. Another perspective one of my sources has is the outside researcher's perspective, which includes focusing on why teens use these sites and what they found was that they used them to build new relationships with people that share the same interests and build on their existing relationships as well. Although I have many perspectives on my topic, there are still some that got left out. Off of the top of my head I can think of a parent's perspective, a teacher's perspective, and a grandparent's perspective. These three are important to add because many parents and almost all grandparents have never used social media sites since they have just become widely popular within the last decade so they never had the opportunity to use them when they were teens. I also want to include a teachers' perspective because it seems like a lot of teachers don't like teens being on Facebook or texting on their cell phones when their in class because they see it as a distraction, so I want to see if the new era social media sites help or harm a teens communication skills.
By my research so far I would say that the story being told is the one that's about all of the different social networking programs out there and how most teens are spending a lot time of them and how it helps or harms their communication with others in their offline lives. As I said before some perspectives that I would consider are parents, teachers, and grandparents since I feel like they are all important and would provide my essay with a diversified group of perspectives. Also I could consider adding the psychology field to my essay because it would provide some solid evidence to show if a teens communication is affected by their use of social networking sites.
An example of a researcher's perspective I have as a source is "topic is that they perceive teenage usage of social media to help build and keep relationships." And that shows that the study they completed shows a big reason on why teens use the social media sites. Another example I have is from a teenager's perspective on why they don't use these sites, "The most popular reasons were: lack of motivation, poor use of time, preference for engaging in other activities, and cybersafety." Again, here's an example of a researcher's perspective, "The study showed that they are using these communication tools to reinforce existing relationships, with friends and partners. The article also makes a point by saying that online content in general can be both positive and negative depending on the context." As you can see I have multiple perspectives already on my AB but I will continue to look for different perspectives because the more I have, the stronger my essay will be. So to reflect on my work so far, I would say that I have a good start on my project but I need to specify a couple words in my research question to make my project more narrow so I can stay on task without needing to include a million different pieces of information. Also I think that I will use almost all of the sources that are on my AB since I spent a good amount of time looking them up. Finally, I think that with continued research on my topic, my essay will be very strong and pass the portfolio review at the end of the year.

Assignment 6 FINISHED-Henry Lee
Do online social networking sites affect the way teenagers communicate?
1.) Espinoza, Guadalupe, Keveri Subrahmanyam, Natalia Waechter, and Stepanie M. Reich. "Online and Offline Social Networks: Use of Social Networks by Emerging Adults." This source studies how people's activities on these sites relate to their offline networks. What they found was that teens use different online contexts to build different aspects of their offline connections. The authors' perspective on this topic is that they perceive teenage usage of social media to help build and keep relationships. This source will help me develop my ideas by giving me statistics about how many teens use the internet to communicate and how cyber bullying kept some of them away from this medium.

This article surveyed a sample of Australian teens for the common non-use of social networking sites. The most popular reasons were: lack of motivation, poor use of time, preference for engaging in other activities, and cybersafety. The author's perspective is that they wanted to find out why some teens weren't using popular social media sites that most people their age can't get enough of. This source will help my research because I have information about why some teens decide not to use this form of communication while researching a different geological demographic rather than just teens in the States.

This source took a survey of American teens aged 12-17 years old and concluded that 55% of Internet-usage were from teens on social networking sites. It also concluded that older teenage girls use the social networking sites to stay connected with friends, whereas boys use the sites to make new friends, and over 50% of users have some form of restricted access to their profile. The founder of the survey wanted to gain insight on the usage of social networking sites among teenagers in America. This article will help provide statistics about the American teenage population and their online usage.

The source examined the adolescents' relationships with friends and strangers in the context of their online interactions. The study showed that they are using these communication tools to reinforce existing relationships, with friends and partners. The article also makes a point by saying that online content in general can be both positive and negative depending on the context. The author's perspective on the social networking topic is that they agree that it is a good transformation and we should use it because of the betterment of technology. I will use this source to help me focus on why teens go on networking sites and how schools try to limit the communication in educational settings.

This study studied the link between hyperactive inattentive traits and autistic social communication impairment. The study found that two social communication trajectories and four hyperactive-inattentive trait trajectories. The author of this source wanted to study how the communication of autistic children and teens had an impairment. This will help my because of the different perspective on autistic teens compared to non-autistic ones.

The article is mainly to see which network sites are most commonly used by the internet audience, and how they have become increasingly popular throughout the last couple of years. The authors perspective on this topic is that they want to provide basic information about social networking sites. This article will assist my research because I can use the information given (facts) to backup my main topics in my paper.

This article was about the relationships between the usage of four kinds of computer mediated communication by students with and w/o learning disabilities. And what it found was that the usefulness of CMC for social activities and support were mainly positive among students. The author's perspective was that they researched a large number of people and concluded that CMC's are useful for students with and without learning disabilities. This will help provide diversity in my research because I can include students who are learning disabled.

The article was about a study examining the online communication on social networking web pages. The participants' social and behavioral adjustment was assessed when they were 13-14 and found that they were more likely to be using social networking later in their lives. The studies concluded that the continuation of their habits in their offline lives are apparent in the online domain.The author of this article wanted to research the relationships between the online and offline lives of teens. This will help me because it directly relates to my topic by saying that teenage communication stays relatively the same between online and offline worlds.

It also found that boys benefit more from online communication than do girls. The authors wanted to see what effect online communication had on teens in general by studying the Chinese demographic. This source will help me because it shows that online communication enhances the lives of boys more than girls and I can write a subtopic on this.
