Assignment 3- Henry Lee

William Bryson is an American author that writes humorous books on travel and both the English language and science. He was born in Iowa but then moved to Britain for the majority of his adult life and finally returned to the States in 1995, and then moved back to Britain in 2003. I think his potential audience is educated people of the English language who are looking to read well written books while throwing in some humor in his writing. While looking online I couldn't find anything about the themes of Bryson's writing so I can't comment on them right now.
I think Bryson's project would fit our academic model very well because in the book he is writing in unconventional ways that normal writers wouldn't attempt but since he is very skilled he is able to research and present what he knows, which makes it seem like a bunch of combined research papers placed into a book. Bryson's writing represents inquiry in his At Home book because the dictionary definition for inquiry is the seeking of information by questioning and I didn't see that in his writing.
I understand the word inquiry well and my understanding of the word means to find answers. An example from the text is on page 69 of the book where he is talking about a previously written novel by another author and he learned more about that text through inquiry. Another example is on page 72, where Bryson is talking about the history of refrigerators and how before they were invented we could only keep foods cold by keeping them in ice. Bryson's book is focusing each chapter on different rooms in his house where he inquires about the history of different things in each room and these were just a couple examples.
After reading this excerpt, no questions directly pop into my head but I think that I should research more about who his is and read other texts from him.

  1. Why do you define inquiry in this way? Is it more than simply finding answers? Would it be inquiry if I wanted to look up a definition of a word? (Wouldn't that be finding an answer?) And do you think that Bryson is really "looking for answers" here?

You say that you didn't find any inquiry in his writing, but in the first part of that sentence you say "Bryson's writing represent inquiry". So, which is it?

Check-minus--- please take more care in completing these assignments!
